Who are we?

Founded in 1972, bibic is a national children's charity based in Somerset. We offer practical help to families and professionals who care for children with neurological and genetic conditions, and acquired and traumatic brain injury; as well as those with specific learning difficulties, like dyspraxia and ADHD.

The charity delivers therapies and support to improve the day to day lives of children with a range of sensory and neurological conditions by working closer with their families and carers on a self help, yet continually supported basis.

Why are we needed?

At bibic we believe that every child’s future matters and because of this we strive to maximise each child’s individual potential to develop their independence and to raise their confidence. We focus on their specific needs and abilities, emphasis achievements and give encouragement. We aim to raise the family’s confidence and to empower them to become the experts in delivering their child’s care at home.

“After years of being put down and negative reactions from others who were supposed to help , we approached bibic and they have changed that and believe in parents and they provided fantastic support to help us cope by understanding our child”.

How do we do it?

bibic works in a partnership with parents and carers and take account of medical, educational and social care support already in place for each child. We see every child as a unique individual; we are able to focus on their specific needs and abilities and to provide the support that is right for them. Our team is interdisciplinary, which means each of our therapists is experienced in many disciplines and can give advice across a broad range of subjects.

Following the inter-disciplinary assessment, which plots where each child sits in their development, we produce a practical tailored programme to address areas that may be delayed. Parents and carers are then taught how to take an active role in their child's development by implementing these programmes at home. Assessments can be one, two or three days long depending on the severity of the condition and the requirements of each family.

Within 4-6 months the family is usually ready to come back again for a reassessment. It is at this point that we can see where the child has improved and what may be impeding improvement in some areas. The programme is adjusted and the family will be taught new techniques where appropriate.
