Could your legacy be a better future for a child? |
Legacies
On the train to London one day, I sat next to a gentleman who worked for a firm of solicitors and our conversation turned to legacies. As a charity we have never been particularly fortunate in receiving many legacies, unlike many of the larger charities, but when we do receive them they are often lifesavers allowing us to do something very special. This is because they come as a lump sum, often with no conditions attached.

I was relating (to my fellow traveller) the tale of how I had just discovered that a large cancer charity, receives about £250,000,000 (enough to keep BIBIC running for 250 years!) every year in this way to support their cause and how we felt privileged and excited if we received any – no matter what size!
Every legacy left to us feels really special. There is something very touching when someone decides that they want to continue making a difference, after their death, to some of society's most disadvantaged children.

This gentleman went on to explain that many people who attended their practice to write their wills wanted to leave money to something that touched them or one of their family members personally and that cancer and animal charities did very well as a consequence. He was very surprised that we do not, until I explained to him that if that was the deciding factor we would always receive few. Money that may have been bequeathed to charity because of the help given to a member of their family would almost certainly, and rightly so, be put in trust to help the child at a later date, and not go to the charity. Many of our children need lifelong support.
So there we have it – BIBIC may never be able to count on receiving many legacies but believe me when we do, we can really put them to good use. Large or small, they all go to building a better future for a child who genuinely needs all the help they can get and if you would like to pledge a legacy to BIBIC we would be so pleased to hear from you. |
