Rett syndrome
Rett Syndrome had, until recently, only been diagnosed in girls but is now known to affect boys as well. It is a complex and challenging disability.
These children are apparently normal at birth, at around one year a period of regression begins, skills are lost and withdraw from social contact is evident. The hands begin to make repetitive clapping, wringing or squeezing movements. Physical difficulties may emerge, some of which will become evident as they grow. Some may never walk and some may walk with the aid of a walking frame. Some may develop scoliosis, and some suffer from epilepsy.
These children are usually attractive with alert expressions. |
