Asperger syndrome

Asperger Syndrome

A child diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome has restictions in the normal functioning in communication, socialisation and imagination. He/she is on the autistic spectrum.

(a) Communication
Although there may be little sign of language delay, the expressiveness of the language may be restrictive, repetitive, literal and he/she may find it difficult to read body language and facial expression.

(b) Socialisation
A child with Asperger Syndrome usually has a narrow range of interests, specific rituals and inflexibility. They generally have a desire to interact with others but find it difficult because of their lack of social flexibility.

(c) Imagination
They tend to find it difficult to understand abstract thoughts and are very literal thinkers with a pronounced lack of flexibility. They can become very focused and obsessive.

Other areas of significance:
Some have attention and concentration problems, coordination difficulties and anxiety/low self esteem may be very relevant to their lives.
