Auditory processing disorder

Auditory Processing Disorder

A central auditory processing disorder (CAPD or APD) is a specific difficulty in efficiently processing speech at the level of the central auditory nervous system. The difficulty increases when there is sensory overload, for example background noise, rapidly presented speech, echoic environments or distracting stimuli. People with CAPD have normal hearing acuity, no learning disability or speech and language disorder. However they appear not to be listening or paying attention and they do not understand what is being said to them. Learning can be greatly improved by providing an environment with minimal distraction, good eye contact and supporting visual or tactile stimuli.
